Drunk on Comics Podcast 335 – The San Francisco Treat

The ever dependable Linz and Tony are back this week (we will always be there for you, dear listener….until we’re not) bringing you more book reviews than you can shake a stick at. But why would you shake a stick at book reviews? Or anything for that matter? Still, there are enough reviews that would never do that anyway. Also news….always news.

Tony did some quick reviews (that were actually quick) on House of Whispers #1 (DC; w. Nalo Hopkinson, a. Domonike Stanton), Iceman #1 (Marvel; w. Sina Grace, a. Nate Stockman), and Journey Into Mystery: The Birth of Krakoa #1 (Marvel; w. Dennis Hopeless, a. Djibril Morissette-Phan. All great books, the origin of Krakoa being especially interesting. Tony also did a longer review of Fantastic Four #2 (Marvel; w. Dan Slott, a. Sara Pichelli). Marvel’s First Family is make a comeback in a big way, and the end of this issue emphasizes just how big (and powerful) the FF family is.

Linz reviewed Low Road West #1 (BOOM! Studios, w. Phillip Kennedy Johnson, a. Flaviano), a book that combines the aftermath of a destructive war with the supernatural in a way that will make for a very interesting tale. She also review Welcome to Wanderland #1 from BOOM! Studios BOOM! Box imprint. This books is for a younger audience, but is fun to read and gives you flashbacks of Alice in Wonderland or Narnia.

Finally, Tony and Linz both reviewed Wrong Earth #1 (w. Tom Peyer, a. Jamal Igle). This title is the very first title from Ahoy Comics, a brand new publisher. The format that Ahoy is going with is interesting, with a normal sized main story, a smaller comic that follows, and a prose story. Their idea is to make each comic more of a magazine than a single story experience. If this first title is a glimpse in to what is to come, this company is going to do well. The main story can only be described as this: What if Batman from Batman ‘66 and Batman from The Dark Knight Returns switched places? This story does not feature Batman, but definitely pick this up and you will see what we mean.

Booze and a book this week was Amazing Spider-man #5 paired with a Guayabera from Cigar City Brewing.
