It Came #3 Review

Titan Comics

Written & Illustrated by: Dan Boultwood, Esq.

Review by: Tom Barnett

“It Came” by Dan Boultwood is such a singularly unique book on the comics market. I picked up the first issue on a whim and found myself simply delighted. This book is a parody of cheap 1950’s sci-fi movies. It comes complete with the smug scientist, the eye-candy leading lady and the army. This issue picks up with our heroes, Dr. Boy Brett and Ms. Doris Night narrowly escaping capture inside of a flying saucer. On the run for their lives, they hope to convince the army to help.

What makes this book great is the humor. While some may compare this to Mystery Science Theatre 3k, it’s much more light hearted and witty. There’s nothing ground breaking about the plot, but you’ve got to read this book with both eyes open and your thinking cap on or you will miss something. Boultwood’s dialogue is second to none. He really nails the feel of a period sci-fi movie, but takes it to a laugh out loud place.

Boultwood’s visuals are clean, crisp and just downright beautiful. He delivers a cartoony style with great facial expressions from his actors. Lots of great little details are thrown in too, such as a string suspending the saucer in the air or using real road photographs behind the scenes of Dr. Brett driving a car. Some of the best stuff comes during the intermission ads in the middle of the book and the extras at the end. The center fold always contains an ad for another parody movie, such as the Lost Valley of the Lost!

It Came is just plain fun, delivering laughs, snappy dialogue and gorgeous artwork, this book is a must read! Pick this up, hunt down the other two issues, download it on Comixology or trade wait, but do yourself a favor and buy this book. This old tomfooler loves “It Came”!
