Y’all know my love for the Miles Morales version of Ultimate Spider-Man, and this was one of the books that I was most looking forward to this week. Now, rarely does something live up to those expectations, but Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #1 most certainly did!

I’ve lauded the writing skills of Bendis quite a bit, but, boy, does he know how to write a compelling story! After seeing Miles in the lead role of the recently relaunched Ultimates title, it was nice to see the “human” side of the character. Some of the most touching personal moments take place in this book, between Miles’ struggle with telling his girlfriend that he’s Spider-Man, the feelings he struggles with about his dad, and the camaraderie he has with Ganke & MJ. I won’t even get into that amazing cliffhanger that he wrote here either! Boy! You NEED to read this book, there’s no two ways about it!

I have to say that Dave Marquez is my favorite Spider-Man artist. His style is perfect for the teenaged hero and his co-stars. Fluid, dynamic action with clean lines and TONS of emotion! Just as I said that Bendis can tell an amazing story, the same can be said about Marquez! The pain, anger, sadness, doubt, joy, surprise…it can all be conveyed through Marquez’ art without a single word balloon to describe it. Marquez is one of the best, period!

I don’t know if you have read this book or not, but I’d suggest that you do! Some of Marvel’s best story tellers work on this title, and Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #1 is one of Marvel’s best books, hands down!
