Advanced Review by Scott Keys

Back in 1997, Christopher Priest and MD Bright introduced Quantum and Woody to the world, and it was good…scratch that, it was great! The original run was a very quirky buddy superhero comedy that followed the titular characters on their misadventures. The concept was simple, these two characters that didn’t care for each other’s company were forced to stay together, or they could die. With a dynamic like that, it had to be fun, right?

If you couldn’t tell, I was a huge fan of the original, so I went in with expectations when I started reading this preview. How does it stack up? I loved it! Asmus does a great job of capturing the feel of the original run, but giving it just enough new wrinkles that it feels fresh. Asmus intersperses flashbacks into the story which advances the plot without feeling like you’ve been jerked out of the story.

Fowler’s art is stellar (as always), and he does such a great job with Asmus’ script that some scenes could be without word balloons and you’d still get the jist of what happened. His facial expressions alone are comedy gold, and his dynamic style lends itself very well to the action scenes, too.

I have to say that after reading issue 1, my expectations were exceeded. I figured that they would emulate the original Priest/Bright run, but I could never have expected that it would be THIS good! That doesn’t happen very often, does it? I highly suggest that you pick this book up when it comes out, especially if you were a fan of the original. You won’t be dissapointed, I promise.

Quantum and Woody #1 comes out July 10, 2013 from Valiant Entertainment at your local comic shop and digitally.
