Review by Tom Barnett

Dark Knights is an 8 issue series, but the first story, from the fan favorite DD veteran, Lee Weeks lasts only 3 issues. I’ve always thought of Daredevil as less of a big cape hero and more of an every man’s hero and this story is clearly of that belief. No robots from the future here, but one bad mutha of a snowstorm and a little girl, Hannah, that needs a donor heart. And the clock is ticking, no pun intended, on that heart.

Weeks is a working master of storytelling here. His panel work is effortless, moving the reader along fluidly through the snowstorm and back out again. The snowstorm is so convincing in his panels that you are actually relieved to come in to the hospital scenes. Colorist Lee Loughridge does a superb job at making those transitions come alive also. Loughridge keeps a fine line on this book taking place at night during a snowstorm without letting it become overly dark and losing clarity of action. Letterer Cowles, similarly keeps all the voices distinct and easy to follow.

The aspect I’ve most enjoyed about this issue though is the inner narrative of Daredevil as he hunts down this donor heart that was on board a crashed helicopter. Hannah lays in the hospital awaiting a heart, what choices does Matt have to make to deliver hope to her and to be able to make it through the night? Strong storytelling about desperate choices in real world situations and a cliffhanger ending, make this a must read.

If you missed the first issue, go back to your LCS and buy it! This is a powerful story not to be missed.
