When I heard that Dan Slott and Michael Allred were doing a Silver Surfer book together, I said, “HELL YEAH!” Now the series is two issues in, three stories if you count the Point One story, and sometimes the hype on these new books can be better than the actual product. Not so here!

Issue two finds the Surfer having to defeat the Never Queen if he hopes to save the Impossible City, the Impericon and the life of one Earth girl whom he has never met, Dawn Greenwood. The Surfer being what he is, slightly naïve and always noble, has been tricked into this task by the leader of the Impericon, an alien named Zed.

This issue has it all; a daring hero, a damsel that is most certainly not in distress, and some plot twists you didn’t see coming. Oh did I also mention it’s funny. Wait until you get to the Hyper-Acid reflux.

The artwork alone on this book is worth the price of admission. Michael Allred is at the top of his game with the Surfer. The aliens of the Impericon look great and the Never Queen is just something that you have to see. Her skin appears to reflect or house all of the cosmos. There’s also a wonderful panel where the Never Queen explains her wishes to the Surfer and she has the image of a young Dawn Greenwood in her pupil. It’s these touches that make Allred’s art so special.

And I can’t forget Laura Allred. The credits list her as Color Artist and that’s so true. The colors just make Michael’s artwork pop. In fact, her coloring is what gives that extra something to the skin of the Never Queen.

This book is far removed from the seriousness of many of the flagship Marvel titles and that’s what I love about it. This is all around great comic book fun. Slott and Allred have crafted a tale of sci-fi fantasy and adventure that would make Jack Kirby proud.

Story: 5/5

Overall: 5/5
