Drunk on Comics Podcast 305: James Gunn, You’re Wrong

Linz and Tony are back again this week with their usual banter and tom-foolery.  Not too much time was spent recapping their lives (OK, Tony did not spend too much time talking about himself) this week…but they did discuss Tony’s beard and how men have a hard time with figuring out the size of things.

Tony quickly covered a couple of books (Transformers, Saga) and spent a little more time on The Unbelievable Gwenpool #25 (writer: Chris Hastings/art: G Gurihiru).  This was the final book in the series and definitely was a beautifully written way to end a series.  If you ever need to explain to a non-comic book reader the appeal of comics, make them read this book.  The love for the art form shows through in the story and works so well with the meta nature of the character.  A must read, even if you have not read any other books in the series.

Tony also reviewed a book from DC with Fantastic influence, The Terrifics #1 (writer: Jeff Lemire/art: Joe Prado & Ivan Reis).  Now, we are not saying that this story resembles a certain first family from another universe….but maybe we are.  Resemblance or not, a good story following a team made up of Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, Plastic Man and Phantom Girl.  You know if Jeff Lemire is involved that it will be worth picking up.

Linz reviewed The Wilds #1 from Black Mask Studios (writer: Vita Ayala/art:Emily Pearson and Marissa Louise).  The base plot of the story is reminiscent of any story from the zombie genre, but with twists that change the story enough to make it fresh and interesting.  If you dig any of the other books from BMS, then be sure to pick this one up as well.
